image corrupt

Post by sam2012 » Mon Jun 04, 2012 1:17 pm

I have recently bought a new notebook for my sister. All her old data (photos) where copied to it and an image was produced onto an external 1 GB 3.5" HDD via USB.

The image was made with the option to check data after creation enabled.

Now, 4 weeks after purchase the new notebook HDD died entirely. Full failure with zero chance of recovering anything from it.

THe image however could not be restored to the new drive OR even mounted on a working system.

when booting with a stick and attempt recovery I get the message that the image would be a multi-part image (which it is not) and that I should start from the newest part.

when attempting to mount it when double-clicking on it I simply get: "select image destination and specify a filename" - although the file is visible and its size is shown (with 81.754 GB)

when trying to check the image I dont even get that - it just says : "select an image" - although I DO just that!!

what is going on here?? this is the worst possible case!!!

is there anything that can be done?
