Restore not bootable because of wrong partition type

Hi,

I'm just evaluating R-Drive-Image and made some restore tests. I ran into a problem when not all partitions of the disk are restored at once.

Environment: Choose a disk Image, consisting of three partitions: Server 2008 R2 boot partition, OS Partition and a data partition.
Goal: restore the bootable system (but not the data partition)
Failure: the boot partition is restored with the wrong type (a logical partition inside an extended partition instead of an active primary partition)

I made a couple of screenshots to clarify the problem:

I tried again with the B6003 release in December, too, but with same result.

Can you confirm this?

Thanks,
Matthias

I've passed the problem to our developers. Thanks for reporting.

Hi,

have you been able to reproduce the behaviour?

Thanks,
Matthias

Fixed in new build 6.0.6004

Hi,

thanks, I can confirm that the partition type is selectable now.
I wonder about another thing during my test in a VM: R-Drive Image denies to restore the C partition onto a 50 GB drive because the original partition size was 60GB, even if only 48GB are used.

Thanks,
Matthias

Maybe, this info can explain: Support for Various Disk Partition Schemes and File Systems.

Hi,

hmm, according to the linked documentation resizing should work. It's a NTFS partition on a MBR disk .

Hi Alt,

The partition is NTFS, the disk structure is an MBR, so resizing should work. At least the manual tells that it should work.
Do you have an idea?

Matthias

My organization ran into the same issue with resizing. Restoring a standard MBR/NTFS disk partition. We think it has to do with disk fragmentation and unmovable system files. Try using disk defragmenter on the disk then take an image of it and see if anything changes when you restore it. I am not sure if this will solve your issue.

I ran into a similar situation where I made a data-only image of a 250 gigabyte hdd with the data consuming 40 gigabytes of the total.

I tried to restore the 40GB data-only image to an 80GB hdd, but it failed to do so saying the destination disk needs to be larger. I was, however, able to restore the 40GB image to at 120GB hdd. One idea I have is that maybe the read-write head in the disk wrote data near a 40GB to 119GB sector on the platter, thus causing fragmentation. I'm not sure if this is the case or not.
