Mounted images exceptionally slow

Mounted with 5 (december release)
Copying from the mounted image to a fast hard drive is extremely slow
Where is the bottle neck?

I can tell you what is NOT the bottle neck:
NOT cpu bound
NOT hd bound, source or destination.

Please help
