Hi everyone,
I am facing a severe data loss issue on my Mac and want to know if R-Studio can help me recover my files before I purchase the software. I really want to avoid spending money if the data is completely unrecoverable.
Back in early 2026, my iPhone ran out of storage space. To clear some room, I created two folders on my macOS Desktop, connected my iPhone via a standard USB cable, and transferred my photos directly to those folders using the default macOS transfer method. Please note that I do not use iCloud for my photos, I didn't have Time Machine set up, and I have absolutely no other backups of these files.
Shortly after the transfer, my brother manually rolled back my Mac's system clock to 2025 for a specific reason. I didn't notice this time change at all because I had been using Windows 11 inside Parallels Desktop for the past 2–3 years, basically living inside the virtual machine and barely ever using the native macOS interface. The software I needed at the time was strictly exclusive to Windows 11 and had absolutely no macOS compatibility, forcing me to stay entirely inside the VM environment and occasionally shut down the Mac during this period.
Because I assumed the files were safe, I never checked the photo folders on my macOS Desktop during those months. I only noticed they were completely empty recently, after I finally found a native macOS alternative to that Windows-exclusive software and switched the system clock back to the correct 2026 time.
When running diagnostics in the Mac Terminal, I noticed this specific line on my Desktop directory:
4.0K /Users/mark/Desktop/$RECYCLE.BIN
Since Parallels shares the macOS Desktop with Windows 11 by default, a Windows Recycle Bin folder is now sitting right on my Mac Desktop. This makes me heavily suspect that Parallels/Windows glitched out because it encountered folders and files with "future" 2026 timestamps while the active system clock was set to 2025, and it might have overwritten, corrupted, or hidden these files.
My main questions for the experts here:
1. Is it theoretically possible for R-Studio to find and recover these photos if they were corrupted or altered by the Parallels VM environment under a time conflict?
2. Will the demo/trial version of R-Studio show me if my photos (.jpg/.heic) are still intact before I buy the license?
3. What is the safest way to scan the drive without risking further overwrites? Should I create a byte-to-byte image first?
