Performing a quick format on a disk typically removes the file system structures and marks the disk space as available for use. However, it does not overwrite the actual data stored on the disk. If the MFT file is expanded to a larger size, it may overwrite the existing MFT records, effectively erasing information about previously stored files.

Sorry for reviving this thread, I wanted to ask if anyone has used Win7 to do any data recovery recently? I have a strange case with loads of computers who only use Win7. Any tips and tricks?

You may try it yourself. Just install R-Studio on any Win7 machine and see what's going on.
