Transfer old hard drive to new hard drive

I have gotten a brand new hard drive to replace my current hard drive in my PC. What I want to do is create an image/clone my current hard drive, then replace my old hard drive with my new hard drive, start up my computer and be able to restore the image of my old hard drive to my new hard drive.

I am able to create the start-up disk and image of the old hard drive. The problem that I run into is when I start the computer up with the new hard drive and I try to restore the image onto that one. I can't seem to get it to work so that the computer runs normally when I start it up. I can't seem to find much documentation for this scenario, so I was hoping someone could help with step-by-step instructions on how to successfully complete this.

I'd recommend you another way: place the old drive into the computer, connect the new drive to it, start the machine, and then clone the old disk to the new one, extending the startup partition, if necessary. Then replace the old drive with the new one and start the computer with the new one. The R-Drive Image help: Copy a Disk to a Disk describes the operation. Pay attention to the "To copy data from an entire hard drive to another hard drive:" link.
