Read only drive?

Post by jmoeller » Thu Apr 02, 2009 8:58 am

I am trying to help a friend recover data off of their notebook's hard drive. I am using the trial software and I am able to access the drive and the data by booting from a USB stick. When I attempt to recover a file (a small test file) to the USB stick, everything works fine. However, when I attempt to recover the same file to a USB attached hard drive, the file isn't written to the drive. When in the explorer I see that they drive is marked Read Only (RO) but the USB stick is allowing writes. I checked menu item to allow write access but it seems to have no effect. Before I purchase the software, I want to ensure I can recover to an external HD as there is more data than a USB stick can handle. Does anyone have any advice? (BTW, I have tried two different USB hard drives with the same result).

Thanks,
Jonathan

I think that the file system on those USB disks is NTFS. If yes, try to do the following: attach one of those USB disks to a working computer, see it connected, then correctly disconnect it through Safely Remove Hardware on the task tray.
That should help.

Thanks, that did the trick. I was able to recover some small files to the external drive, so now I will purchase.

I really appreciate your help and fast reply.
