P.S. Always thinking about the importance of the data, the data recovery specialists will image the drives in the safest and less distressing way and next will reconstruct the RAID and do the data recovery process, working with the disk images/copies.

Now focus on the data and give them a value.

If they are precious to you, think about asking some estimates for a RAID data recovery of 4 HDDs and beware they will act as we do: flat rates, no diagnosis costs and finally, "no recovery, no fee".

This is the typical scenario that requires a data recovery specialist.

Though search my posts where I explain that the biggest error that people do when They do DIY data recovery is to skip to diagnose the single drives SMART values with utilities like CrystalDiskInfo and next big error is to skip to clone/image them.

If they care their data, they should bear in mind that the unique copy of their data out there are the ones present in the RAID original drives. If one is failed, also the others (especially if they have the same age) may fail or even die during the data recovery operations.

In the mean time if SMART are bad or in warning, the drives must be cloned with specific hardware devices that avoid to stress the disk when bad sectors are encountered: nobody knows how many bad sectors are present and at the end they could be thousands. Cloning with PC and software will hang many time on each of them, killing the drive.

Last: we do receive sets of disks made unrecoverable by crazy or self-killing actions made by the users while playing with the NAS web interface. The worst ones that happen are conversions to RAID 0 or 10, RAID full initializations and stale drives forced to return online (destroying the entire parity structure)

Said that, this looks the typical scenario that explains why they do exist raid recovery specialists

I am trying to recover the data off of my NAS unit, but have not been successful to this point. It appears that I screwed something up when replacing a disk that failed and somehow erased the volume data so I can't get to anything via the RAID.

I powered down the unit last night and pulled each of the drives (labeling each 1-4) so I could mount them in my PC. I tried to use R-Studio by setting it to Raid 5, but all it returned after 6+ hours of scanning was a bunch of partial files so I am assuming I didn't have the raid parameters set correctly? When I say
"partial files", the directory tree wasn't recovered and each of the files only were small chunks as opposed to the entire video file or image, etc.

I then used ReclaiMe, to try and determine the Raid parameters. During it's initial scan it reported that drive 2 was "empty". This was the replacement drive that I inserted into the array after the original failed. ReclaiMe stated that it would try to rebuild the array using Parity Checking? I let it run overnight starting at midnight, but appeared to freeze as it didn't make any progress from 2am to 8am when I checked on it.

Can anyone assist regarding what to do next? I have read great things about R-Studio and am hopeful that it will save my butt!!
