Well, the idea is simple.
When you backup "data only", you backup only the sectors that contains existing files. You get the image faster and smaller. Recommended for regular disk backups.
When you backup "sector by sector", you backup the entire disk with free space. You get the image slower and larger. But you can use it to recover deleted files, restore previous partitions, and so on.

Hi,

I know a lot has been written about this on the web, but I do not see anything specific to R-DRIVE in your help or forum and it seems some backup software handle sector by sector differently. -Some do smart sector backup, where only sectors containing data are backed up.

Is there any advantage to sector by sector when it comes to bare metal restore, or Is it's primary use for backing up a corrupt hard drive?

In short, can someone please explain the pros and cons of each when done via R-Drive?
