I'm sorry, but I've got to disagree here. In the hundreds, if not thousands of My Passport recoveries that we've done here in my lab I've not seen a single one that was a failure in the USB controller. 80% of the time it's a combination of bad sectors and firmware malfunction, the other 20% have a failed head stack assembly. Any of which will result in the drive reporting 0kb size to the OS.

You can't just straight change the USB bridge on these as it's built onto the HDD's own PCB. You'd need to transfer the U12 chip from one PCB to the other to make it compatible.
Also, encryption wouldn't be an issue as it's stored on the HDD's system area, and a hidden LBA address, both of which are on the platters not the PCB.
