Unable to recover files on Macbook (Few files discovered)

I am attempting to recover files from my macbook laptop. I am using an admin account to run R-Studio from an external hard drive. The installation of the program was successful, I created an image from the (main) drive I am trying to recover files from, and then I scanned it. When I scanned the image file, I noticed only about 38 files were discovered. There are many more files than that on the computer. I continued to "recover marked" files. In the end, I had fewer than 40 files, some of which were extremely large, like a 18 GB bmf file and a 7 GB pac file. There were no jpg or png files that were discovered, though I know in my other admin account on the same computer, there are hundreds of those types of images. Does anyone know what might be happening? Am I missing a step?
