Of course this is possible, straightforward and without any tricks.
If you're talking about saving an image of an external disk to another external disk, just select the disk to image and the other external disk as the target, and start the process as usual. It may be much longer though because of slower data transfer rate, especially for the USB2 interface.
The same procedure is for disk cloning.
I did that many times, and never experienced any problems, set aside broken disks.
