I read the metadata one by one, using mdadm --examine.

For each of them I got, at the end of the metadata dump, information like this:

Device Role: Active Device <N> (0..3)
Array State: AAAA....................... ('A' == active, '.' == missing)

I presume the number, <N>, listed after 'Active ...
