I use drive-image with the standalone iso to backup my linux o/s partitions - I've been trying to find a way to mount the .arc file under linux, not windows to restore files from the backup...

No, you can't do that.
A solution I can think up right now (although I haven't checked it) is as follows:
1. Install a File System driver for the FS used in the Linux disk on the Windows machine where R-Drive Image is installed. There are both free and commercial ones out there for most Lunux FSs.
2. Connect the image on the R-Drive Image Windows machine and copy the files using that driver.
