step by step guide for new user?

Post by kmk » Sat May 09, 2026 10:55 am

Hi everybody,

I have a standalone, 1 computer license for r-drive image that is installed on my computer. My computer has a c: drive for installs, and d: drive for data. All combined the drives have about 1 TB in use. I have a 2TB external USB drive for the image/backup I'll need to create. I bought r-drive image to manage changing this computer from the OEM win 11 home, to a windows 11 pro version I have purchased. I have two goals in this process.

1. I want to create a complete system recovery option before so that if the OS change goes sideways, I have an easy way to restore everything to its current state. basically a 'rollback' option

2. if the OS change goes perfectly, having an easy way to reinstall my programs and files on the new OS. I plan to keep the c: drive and d: drive set up.

But, I'm not exactly sure what steps I need to take and in what order.

For example, do I need to run r-drive image off of a usb drive instead of having it installed? Do I need to create separate images of both my c drive and my d drive? Will the same 'image. restore file or what have you' that I make with r-drive image serve both of those purposes (both rollback if needed, and easy reinstallation if a rollback isn't needed)?

I've read through the documentation, the FAQs, and this forum, but I haven't found a step by step guide for what I will need to do for this use case. Everything seems to be specific feature based, but not a goal oriented workflow.

Does such a guide exist?

Many thanks for any help you can give!
Kim

There are articles of the bottom on this page that are more goal oriented.
